SVD gets three Priests
Three Deacons of the Society of Divine Word (SVD) Missionaries were recently ordained into the Priesthood at the St. Dominic Parish at Adweso in the Koforidua Diocese.

They are Rev. Frs. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah, SVD, Eugene Bruce Asante, SVD and Emmanuel Adjei Adjetey, SVD.

The ordination was performed by Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD, Bishop of the Donkorkrom Vicariate in the Afram Plains with Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of Koforidua, concelebrating.

Other concelebrants included Very Rev. Fr. George Angmor, SVD, Provincial Superior of the SVD Ghana Province; Very Rev. Fr. Peter Aclortey, Provincial Superior of the Togo-Benin Province; Rev. Msgr. Pius Kpeglo, and Very Rev. Fr. John K. Louis, former Holy Spirit Cathedral Administrators in Accra as well as several Priests.

In attendance were several Priests, Religious, Seminarians, families, friends and Parishioners from the Holy Spirit Cathedral and St. Anne’s Parish both in Accra.
The candidates were presented for ordination by Rev. Fr. John Asiedu, SVD, Prefect of the Common Formation Centre at Tamale, who testified to their worthiness to be ordained Priests. They promised to respect and obey their Superiors after which Bishop Kumordji laid hands on them and consecrated them.

The Bishop in a homily called on the new Priests to see their call into the Priesthood as a privilege and be grateful to God despite the challenges they might encounter in their journey. He entreated them to be submissive to their Superiors, collaborate and work together with other Priests and Religious to enhance the work of God. He urged them to eschew pride, be compassionate, recognize their weaknesses and ask the Lord to strengthen them.

Bishop Kumordji called on the new Priests to nourish the faithful entrusted to their care with the Word of God and lead by example.
He said they had been called to serve and not to served, praying that the love of God in the Eucharist would strengthen them in their resolve to be missionaries to the world. The Prelate called on the faithful to support them both spiritually and materially, appreciate and help them to be good Priests.

Fr. Angmor commended the Priests for accepting the call of God to proclaim his Word as missionaries and thanked their parents for offering their sons to the Church, encouraging all to pray for them to carry out their ministry faithfully and fruitfully.

Fr. Agbeyome-Akpah on behalf of his colleagues, expressed appreciation to all who had supported them in their formation and called for continuous prayers and assistance. The Priests were presented with bouquet from the Church and parcels from the Friends of the SVD. A day after his ordination, Fr. Agbeyome - Akpah  was recently ushered to the Holy Spirit Cathedral in a colourful procession by Parishioners of the Cathedral for his first Thanksgiving Mass, reports Kwadwo Kusi-Appiah and Loretta Sarpong.

In the procession were various Societies in their uniform.

Fr. Akpah, a former Mass Server, received applause from his friends, school- mates and well-wishers.

He is the ninth Parishioner of the Holy Spirit Cathedral to be ordained as a Priest.

The Thanksgiving Mass was concelebrated by Very Rev. Fr. Samuel Filton -Mensah, the Cathedral Administrator; Very Rev Fr. John Louis, a former Catherdral Administrator who was the Homilist and several Priests.

Fr. Louis Fr. Akpah to emulate Jesus the good Shepherd, emphasizing on the qualities a good Shepherd must possess.


He asked Fr. Akpah to be humble, courageous, selfless, caring, watchful and patient in his dealings with his flock.


He charged him to assist his flock to grow spiritually, be prayerful and feed them with the Word of God.


He thanked the Parents of the ordinandi for forgoing their son, a Pharmacist to serve the Lord.


The Young Ladies Sodality of Mary, gave a brief welcoming performance.

Fr Akpah has been posted to Papau New Guinea for his first priestly assignment.
