Rise in teenage pregnancy
Recently, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of Koforidua, lamented the upsurge of teenage pregnancies in the country.
Dedicating the Our Lady, Cause of Joy Grotto at Etwiso Yoyin-Nkurakan in his Diocese, the Bishop called on all to preserve the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.
The reports that some JHS girls got pregnant before writing their Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE) in April-May this year, is very disappointing.
The Catholic Standard deems it unfortunate that this social canker is on the rise in the country and this should be of great concern to all. We should bear in mind that girls and women play important roles in nation-building and as such should be protected from pre-marital sex and abortion. To avoid unwanted pregnancies, we suggest that Religious and Moral Education should be intensified in our Junior and Senior High Schools.
The Catholic Standard advises parents to provide the needs of their teenage girls to avoid their being lured into immoral acts.
They should also ensure that their children do not watch pornographic films and photographs to avoid temptation into pre-marital sex. This Paper calls on all Ghanaian parents to safeguard the dignity of their families by fighting against teenage pregnancies and other social vices that are destroying today’s family.
We caution girls that early pregnancy disorganizes their schooling and makes them a burden and liability to both their parents and society at large.
Teenage girls are reminded that abortions could lead to death and sterility.
The Catholic Standard cautions those who are advocating for legalization of abortion to desist.
