NUNCIO MEETS PRESIDENT MAHAMA

The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich has been received by the President of the Republic of Ghana at the Flagstaff House, Accra, recently.

The two discussed issues relating to Church-State relations and the outcome of the visit of President Mahama to the Holy See in November where he was received in audience by Pope Francis.

The Nuncio mentioned in brief the contribution of the Catholic to the integral development of Ghana, particularly in the realm of Education, Health, provision of water, agriculture, good governance, justice, peace and reconciliation. He explained that these were projects and services that go   directly to the people of Ghana.

Stressing on Education, the Nuncio said that it would be appreciated if there was a comprehensive Accord between the State and Church regarding the management of Catholic Educational Institutions. Such an Accord, he explained, exists in some African countries.

Archbishop Speich expressed satisfaction regarding the cordial relations that prevail among Christians and non-Christians. He however, cautioned against the seemingly rising religious fundamentalism/radicalism, which is tainted with political undertones, by some religious bodies. These trends, he noted if not quickly addressed may soon affect the peace, national unity and development of Ghana.

The Nuncio was also happy for the very good relations between Ghana and the Holy See. He added that it was for the consolidation of this relationship that President Mahama was received in audience by the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

In his response to the issues raised by the Nuncio, the President Mahama acknowledge and expressed his Governments appreciation to the Church for her invaluable contribution to the development of Ghana in many areas. He however appealed to the Nuncio to get the Church in Ghana to establish more Vocational Training Institutes for empowering the youth to have skills that will make them more productive in the Ghanaian society.

The President promised to get the Ministry of Education to look into the requests made by the Nuncio.
