Nuncio commends SNAM
The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev. Jean-Marie Speich, has commended the Standard Newspapers and Magazines (SNAM) Limited, publishers of The Catholic Standard for promoting Catholic values and teachings, thus, enhancing the evangelization mission of the Church.
The Nuncio said this at the Eighth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of SNAM, held at the Board Room of its Press House at Sowutuom in Accra.
The Meeting was attended by representatives of the shareholders of the Company including Mr. Dela Selormey, who represented the Knights of St. John International, Mr. Ekow Paintsil, Knights of Marshall; and Mr. T.A. Dawson-Otoo, National Catholic Laity Council as well as Priest from the various Arch/Dioceses and Board members.
Also in attendance was the Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio, Rev. Fr. Renato Kuĉiç.
The Nuncio said he was at the meeting to encourage the Board, Management and staff to continue the good work they were doing.
Archbishop Speich expressed satisfaction with the improved quality of the print-out of The Catholic Standard as well as its content, saying that he was happy the Paper had found its right place not only in the Church but in society at large.
He, however, suggested the inclusion of articles and stories of interest to the youth in the Paper to attract them to buy and read it.
This, he said, would make the youth better understand the diversity of the Church in order not to be overshadowed and swayed by other faiths.
He challenged the Board and Management to find new ways to promote the Catholic faith by making good use of the social media to reach especially the young people and a wider audience.
He urged them to move the Paper forward with determination and pledged the Nunciature’s support for the growth of the Company.
Mr. Isaac Fritz Andoh, Managing Director of SNAM, who welcomed shareholders to the meeting, noted that The Catholic Standard in the past 17 years had come out weekly without fail in spite of the proliferation of newspapers in the country.
He said the Paper would intensify its evangelization mission.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Sir Samuel Kofi Asubonteng, who gave an overview of the state of the Company, thanked the Nuncio for his encouraging message and for challenging them to work harder for the growth of the Company.
He noted that the Company’s income was mainly from Newspaper sales, advertisements and Industrial Jobs.
He said the Company made modest gains in advertisements, industrial jobs and the sale of the Paper in the year under review.
Sir Asubonteng however said that SNAM could make more progress with the acquisition of new printing machines and stressed the need to recapitalize the Company to make it more viable.
Shareholders at the meeting lamented the high indebtedness to the Company and stressed the need to improve on its debt collection.
