Archbishop Naameh is new President of GCBC

Most Rev. Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, has been elected the new President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) for a three-year term.

The election was held at the end of a ten-day Plenary Assembly of the Conference which took place at Tamale in the Northern Region on the theme:Reconciliation with God, Humanity and Nature in the Year of Mercy.
He takes over from Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Bishop of Konongo-Mampong, who had ended his term of office.
Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra is the new Vice President of the Conference.
Archbishop Naameh, currently the Chairman of the Northern Regional Peace Council, was born September 8, 1948 at Nandom, Piina in the Upper West Region andordained Priest on December 16, 1977.

He was appointed first Bishop of Damongo on February 3, 1995,consecrated Bishop together with four other Bishops on May 28, 1995 at the El WakSports Stadium in Accra by His Eminence, Josef Cardinal Tomko and on June 4, 1995, he was installed the first Bishop of Damongo.

OnFebruary 12, 2009, he was appointed the third Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale after the retirement of Most Rev. Gregory Ebo Kpiebayaand installed on April 25, 2009.
As Bishop, he has held various Episcopal positions at the National Catholic Secretariat. From 1996 to 2002, he was the Episcopal Chairman for Justice and Peace; 1996 to 2002, Episcopal Chairman for Chaplaincies; 2005 to 2011, Episcopal Chairman for Catholic Education and 2010 to 2016 Episcopal Chairman, Department of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM) and the Standard Newspapers and Magazines Limited, Publishers of The Catholic Standard
From 2006 to 2014, he was a   Member of the GES Council and from 2010 to 2016 Chairman, Governing Council of Catholic University.

In 2011, he was the Principal Consecrator at the ordination of Most Rev. Peter Paul Angkyier, Bishop of Damongo and Principal Co-consecrator of Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga and Most Rev. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, Bishop of Wa in 2016.

Archbishop Naameh was Assistant Parish Priest atOur lady of Annunciation (OLA) Cathedral Parish from 1977 to1981, during which he also served as Chaplain for the Diocesan Laity Council, Diocesan Vocations Director and Inter-religious Dialogue Director.
He was a Lecturer and Formator at St. Victor’s Major Seminary from 1986 to 1995 before undertaking his Sabbatical in the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (1992) where he obtained M.A. in Oriental and African History.
He had his Primary Education at Ko, UW Region from 1957 to 1963; GCE ‘O’ Level        from 1963 to 1968   at St. Charles Secondary School, Tamale; GCE ‘A’ Level  from 1968 to 1970 at Government Secondary School, Tamale.
From 1971 to 1977, he had his Philosophical and Theological studies at the St. Victor’s Seminary, Tamale and from 1981 to 1986, PhD in Theology at Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet, Muenster, West Germany.
